Match Report: Wokingham Town U18s Girls vs Wargrave Lions

In our final game of the year, we faced Wargrave Lions – a team we met at the start of the season in our opening fixture, where we suffered an 8-3 defeat. This time around, the result was a 5-2 loss – an improvement, but still one that gives us areas to focus on as we head into the new year.

We had a solid turnout with 14 players, giving us some much-needed options for substitutions. However, we were missing key playmakers like Abi M in midfield, which left us without some creativity and control in that area. Despite this, the squad available was very strong and put in a determined and resilient display.

First HalfWe started the game brightly and showed real energy against a very strong Wargrave Lions team. Wargrave are well-organized, composed on the ball, and move for each other with precision – a clear reason why they are contenders to win the league. Our back four, led superbly by Maya, put in an excellent shift, staying organised and disciplined despite Wargrave’s attacking pressure. They frequently overloaded the midfield, playing a system that shifted from 5 in the middle to 4 up front, making them difficult to contain.   This meant, yet again, Elisa would have to put a proper shift in.   In the first 20 minutes, she was marking 3 or 4 at one time, as the rest of the team started to work out Wargrave's formation.

For all their pressure, we held firm for much of the first half. Our defensive performance limited Wargrave's chances, but a goal just before the halftime whistle broke our resistance. There was also a pivotal moment when Shruthi was clearly fouled in the box – her leg hooked behind her – but the referee waved away our appeals for a penalty. That decision could have changed the complexion of the game.

Second HalfThe second half started poorly for us as we conceded a couple of very simple goals, largely down to individual errors. These were avoidable and something we’ll need to address in training. However, the team rallied and began to find a foothold in the game, showing real character and determination.

Amy was the standout performer in the second half. She put in a tireless and courageous display, dominating the right flank with a series of powerful, driving runs from her own half. Her energy and fearless approach caused problems for the Wargrave midfield and defence, and she created two brilliant opportunities, both converted by Shira. Amy’s efforts earned her the Player of the Match award, not only for her contributions to the goals but for the fearlessness and spark she brought to the team.

Shira, as always, was clinical in front of goal, scoring twice – a rare occasion where she didn’t manage to bag a hat-trick. Nonetheless, her composure and finishing gave us a much-needed lift as we pushed to make the game competitive.

Final ThoughtsDespite the result, there were positives to take from this performance. The defensive structure in the first half and the attacking intent shown in the second are signs of the progress we’ve made. Wargrave Lions are an excellent team, and we matched them for long periods, which is a credit to the players.

That’s it for matches this year. We’ll regroup and come back stronger when the season resumes on January 11th. Enjoy the break, and see you all in the new year!
