Wokingham Town Girls (U18) learn a lot from today's loss

Wokingham Town vs. Wargrave Lions

We kicked off our season against Wargrave Lions, a team of U17/U18 players like ourselves. This was the first competitive game for our merged squad, and while we hoped for a win, the main objective was to learn from the experience.

The first 15 minutes were rough, but not through any fault of the girls. They were still adjusting to their positions, shape, and even getting to know each other’s names. During this time, Wargrave managed to score three quick goals before we could settle, which is never ideal.

Wargrave played with a flat back four, and although their fullbacks weren’t pushing forward, we struggled to outnumber them in midfield. This was primarily due to us being too wide, leaving large gaps that Wargrave exploited.

Shira reminded us of our attacking potential, making one of her signature runs through their defence to chase down a beautiful pass from Olivia. She slotted home her first goal of the season, making it 1-3.

In the second half, we adjusted by packing the midfield, which successfully forced Wargrave to play out wide—a preference for us. However, as the game wore on, our fitness levels showed. We were second to the ball too often, giving Wargrave time to control the play, pick passes, and extend their lead.

Despite tiring, Shira scored two more goals (her first hat-trick of the season), assisted by Milanna and Evie. The game ended 3-8, but we took a lot away from it.

We’ve learned that we have a talented squad capable of winning many games this season, but we need better organisation. Our defence and midfield will improve as they get used to each other’s play and positioning. Maya, Shruthi, and Beth may feel disappointed, but it’s not on them. Once we gel, the team will be more instinctive in their movements and awareness.

Special thanks to our linesman for a busy morning, and to Shai and Sarah for their help and support.

Star player this week was Shira for her impressive hat-trick and standout performance. Well done!

Note: I was too busy watching the game and not making notes. Hopefully my report can be more detailed next week.
